Lahore High Court Orders EV Charging Stations at All Fuel Stations to Combat Smog
Lahore High Court Pushes for EV Charging Stations and Environmental Reforms
In a major step toward combating smog and environmental pollution, the Lahore High Court (LHC) has directed authorities to install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at all fuel stations. The move is part of a broader strategy to reduce air pollution and promote cleaner transportation options.
Court’s Concerns Over Smog and Water Wastage
During a hearing on environmental issues, Justice Shahid Karim expressed frustration over the lack of effective measures to curb smog and prevent water wastage. He declared a water emergency and emphasized the urgent need for action.
To address water conservation, the court ordered the installation of water meters across the city. It also instructed the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) to introduce tax incentives for eco-friendly buildings, encouraging sustainable construction practices.
Greener Spaces and Water Restoration Efforts
The Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) was given the responsibility of restoring canal water to improve urban greenery and water quality. In addition, both LDA and DHA were directed to plant at least one Miyawaki forest in every sector, a method known for creating dense, fast-growing urban forests.
Promoting Electric Rickshaws and Better Parking Solutions
The court also stressed the importance of transitioning petrol-powered rickshaws to electric ones and called for an incentive program to make this shift easier for rickshaw drivers.
Justice Karim also criticized WASA for its slow progress in installing water meters and ordered improvements in the system. Additionally, the court directed authorities to create more parking facilities through public-private partnerships, aiming to ease traffic congestion and improve urban planning.
Next Steps
The court has scheduled the next hearing for March 21, where it will review progress on these initiatives. With these directives, the LHC is pushing for a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Lahore, urging authorities to take immediate and effective action.
